Kavita Rajvansh

Kavita, a name originating from Hindi & Marathi languages means poetry and true to her name Kavita Rajvansh’s life has reflected poetry through her singing from the beginning.

At a very early age she won accolades for solo and group singing performance in interschool competitions. By the grace of God, Kavita was fortunate to get precious artistic guidance from Vidyatai Parwardhan, Ramnaath Tharwal, Prakash Buddhisagar, Sudha Karmarkar and Sulabha Deshpande among others. In fact these musical stalwarts provided the much needed impetus to young Kavita to continue learning vocals and pursue it as a full fledged career. Kavita was also an avid sports enthusiast and took part in various outdoor sports.



A brief glimpse on Kavita’ s family tree convinces us that art runs in her blood and has come to her as a blessing through her forefathers. Her grand father, Shri Prabhakar Gupte was a poet, and grandmother, Vijaya Mahadwar-Gupte, was an artist in the film industry. . In fact she was the lady who featured in the V Shantaram’s Rajkamal films very famous trade mark of a lady pouring flowers. Kavita’s Father, Mahadev Khamkar was a noted theater director who made a big name in the theater industry. Her mother, Dr. Neelambari Khamkar was also a noted stage and theatre actor.

Kavita’s first step towards a singing career came at the tender age of 8 years when she became a part of “Surbahar”, a Hindi musical orchestra way back in 1978. Kavita Rajvansh, the singer had arrived and from that day there has been no looking back for her till date. She has truly extended the artistic legacy of her forefathers.

1982 was the year when Kavita got the opportunity to perform for Yuva Kala Manch as a Chorus singer. She grabbed this golden opportunity to learn the various nuances of singing including learning to sing in a wide variety of Indian Languages.

In no time Kavita was performing as a lead singer with well known major orchestra groups in Mumbai. During this time she had the wonderful opportunity to sing throughout the world with playback singing greats like Suresh Wadkar, Sukhvinder Singh, Uttara Kelkar, Babul Supriyo, Shankar Mahadevan, Shailendra Singh, Mohammed Aziz, Vinod Rathod and Arun Bakshi. She also had the privilege and pleasure of performing on stage with bollywood actors like Chunky Pandey, Farha, Bhagyashree, Mamta Kulkarni, Akshay Kumar, Raveena Tandon, Sudha Chandran, etc.

Her stints as a singer with Doordarshan and All India Radio have given her singing career an all round shape which has seen her performing on the stage and also in the recording studio.

Kavita’s childhood was spent listening to the timeless and sacred Sanskrit chants & verses that clearly made a profound influence on her singing and speech. Thus, it comes as no surprise that Kavita can effortlessly croon in various languages like Marathi, Hindi, Punjabi, Sindhi, Bengali, Telugu, Bhojpuri, Gadhwali, Malaysian, etc. This unique ability of singing in myriad languages culminated in Venus, a big name in the music industry signing her for singing in Albums in Punjabi and 3 Bhojpuri movies as a playback singer. Kavita, though, got her real break in Hindi cinema as a playback singer when Rajshri Productions singed her for a film with Kumar Shanu and her Guru Raam-Laxman as the music director.

Kavita has also had the honour and privilege to work with music directors like Shrirang Aras, ,Dilip Sen-Samir Sen and Arun Bakshi.
